Aigar Leok enters his second season in the MX1-GP World Championship in 2008 and will be looking to banish the memories of a tough debut campaign in 2007 where some bad luck and injuries to his shoulder and back prevented him from rising higher than 19th in the standings.
The ‘Leok’ name is firmly established within the motocross world championship history and Aigar is the youngest from a strong Estonian lineage that includes current MX1 star and cousin Tanel. ‘Aix’ embarks on his second term with the YZ450F in the confines of the Van Beers team for whom he won the Dutch MX2 title in 2006.
Aigar, who has been based in Belgium for the last four years, joined Yamaha with three podium results after apprentice years at Grand Prix level from 2004 to 2005.
The former MX2 German and European 80cc Champion endured a difficult opening to the ’06 season where several crashes did not help his points tally. Better results came at Teutschenthal in Germany and he completed the campaign on a high, including a highest finish of sixth overall in the sand of Lierop. He then secured further domestic silverware by emerging from a close fight in the final Dutch Championship moto. Hard working, determined but one of the friendliest people in the paddock, Leok’s ability and potential is undoubted; he just needs a run of luck.
The MX1 series represented a hard challenge for 2007 and several crashes and small injury problems meant that Leok was often battling to enter the top ten. His season-best result arrived again at the final round in the sand of Lierop with ninth position; a sign that the Estonian is coming to grips with the 450.
